As August unfolds I realize how close we are getting to pumpkin spice and sweaters on top of sweaters. Here’s a little animated vignette about it.

Below are stages of work including pencil keys, rough animation, final line, color and post production.
I illustrated and animated a city, where, whenever I visit, I feel at home.
I had an idea of doing this piece for a while at the back of my mind, and finally decided to dedicate some time to do it this week.
Last year I did a similar piece for Chicago as a celebration of my 4-year residence here, and the concept of square vector city illustration stuck with me. I figured it won't be very complex to do another city ("Chicago" illustration was a breeze), and how wrong was I!:))
In case of "Chicago" I wanted to repeat the city's almost rigid symmetrical geometry - the Art Institute as the centerpiece and all other buildings, etc. surrounding it (basically I has a picture in my mind of what exactly I wanted happening on the screen), therefore I didn't have much of preliminary sketching and jumped right into building the illustration, which turned out just fine. For SF and it's curvy and asymmetrical geometry I planned to keep at least some "geographical" accuracy and have the Golden Gate Bridge and Presidio on the left, Painted ladies toward the center and so on, but didn't really see how it would look in the end, and still held on to building assets right away.
This approach led to several problems: the amount of details in buildings and therefore parts of illustration varied (for example, the Painted Ladies ended up too detailed and had to be stripped down a bit); color and therefore weight balance was inconsistent (Golden Gate bridge was sinking my illustration to the left, and I had to figure out how much red I'd need to bring in to the right to equal it out); color palette initially included white and shades of yellow, which rendered the piece rigid so I cut the amount of all shades, and got rid of white completely leaving it only in the text outline. All of these corrections took hours of my time, a chunk of my nerves, and taught me a great lesson of carefully planning all work, not only client commissions:))
I spend two days developing the illustration, and after I was satisfied with the result I animated it slightly just to give it a point of "entrance" plus I really wanted to move the cable car and make the seals breath on their platform.
And there it is, my take on California's jewel.
